Wistar Welcomes New Leaders in Science and Strategy

In December, Dr. Vincent Wu joined the Vaccine & Immunotherapy Center as the newest Caspar Wistar Fellow. He brings a decade of experience using cutting-edge single-cell and computational approaches to tackle one of science’s toughest challenges: the HIV reservoir. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Wu sharpened his expertise at both the lab bench and the computer.
In January, Dr. Jianliang Xu joined the HIV Cure and Viral Diseases Center as an assistant professor. A molecular biologist with deep training in fundamental immunology, Dr. Xu also has specialized expertise in antibody and nanobody engineering. He focuses on designing and optimizing antibodies and nanobodies—compact, highly versatile antibody fragments—to create next-generation tools that can be rapidly applied to drug development and diagnostic technologies for HIV and other emerging pathogens.

In March, The Wistar Institute welcomed James Lovett back to its Board of Trustees. A seasoned life sciences executive and former CEO of Myonex, James previously served on Wistar’s Board from 2015 to 2022. He brings deep industry expertise and a strong understanding of Wistar’s mission as the Institute continues to advance impactful biomedical discoveries.
In April, Dr. Murad Mamedov joined the Center for Advanced Therapeutics as an assistant professor. An immunologist, Dr. Mamedov studies gamma-delta T cells, a unique group of immune cells with strong potential for next-generation cancer immunotherapies. Using CRISPR genome-editing tools, his lab aims to uncover how cancer cells are recognized and how immune cells can be engineered to destroy them more effectively.
